Call for Papers:
International Uyghur Studies – Producing and Transmitting Uyghur
Cultural Artefacts
Dates: 4-5 November 2021.
Locations: Paris – École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) and Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (Inalco).

This two-day conference brings together a diverse group of individuals, academics and artists, whose work focuses on Uyghur people, their history, language, cultural productions, and society. Our approach aims at interrogating the growing field of “Uyghur Studies” and encouraging networking across period, specialisation, and disciplinary boundaries. We also wish to open this event to participants who contribute to producing and translating Uyghur language materials outside academic institutions.
The questions we would like to discuss include: How do we define Uyghur studies? What is at stake in the production and transmission of Uyghur cultural artefacts? How does the growth of scientific literature based on Uyghur sources impact our (mis)conceptions regarding the region’s history, its people, their language, cultural practices, and society? What are the different perspectives brought forward by contemporary Uyghur artists, filmmakers, writers, musicians, and poets on what is happening in their homeland?
In order to explore these interrogations, participants are encouraged to address one of the following topics:
– Transmitting, teaching, and training in Uyghur language and civilisation.
– Uyghur literature, as seen through the eyes of writers, readers, and translators. – Contemporary Uyghur cultural productions.
Conference details:
1) Participants who wish to propose a paper for the conference should send a 300-word abstract and a short biography to the following address by July 15 2021: uyghur.studies@uyghur-institute.org.
2) We seek proposals from graduate, PhD, and post-doctoral students; emerging and confirmed scholars; as well as people engaged in writing, translating, teaching, or learning Uyghur language regardless of their educational background.
3) Meals will be provided for participants. We have limited funding to sponsor accommodation and travel expenses of participants. However, participants affiliated to Universities and Research Centres are encouraged to apply for funds from their home institutions. Please indicate in your email whether you have access to funding when you submit your abstracts.
